Lithuanian Formula Championship Day 2, Kintai

Hi again!

So, the forecast for the second day was a bit lighter but we still expected to have a great racing action and atmosphere to pop in along the racing area.

Actually, when we first got on to the skippers meeting the wind was nearly the same as the first day - about 6-7m/s. Everyone was enthusiastic and was looking forward to upcoming races. Unfortunately, just after we wished for a favorable winds it dropped and in a few moments we had a very light formula conditions with the wind reaching up to 4-5m/s.

Anyway, the judges decided to give it a try. So, we took our biggest sails, biggest fins and head for the choppy water of the Curonian Bay.

At first, only a few guys guys were planning: Mantas Gresevičius LTU 13 and Karolis Sipavičius LTU 1001. Ah, I though, even though I am a light weight, it's gonna be a very tough challange to beat them as they were going really well!

So, to make it short and informative the judges made 3 races in overall with 3 races being canceled due to the lack of wind.

In the first race I started from a port tack and got into the shadow of other sailor what resulted in me being left in the messy water. I was forced to make a tack to feel at least some fresh wind again. But as I later find out the left side was a bad choice as the very light gust was awarding those who chosen the right side of the course. So, after sailing in a non planning mode for about 5 minutes the gust probably felt so guilty that it also spread to the left side. As a result, I started planning and retrieving a lot of precious places which I lost of my strange decision on the starting line. Later on, the wind become a little bit more stable and I managed to fight back until the 9th place.

Second and third race attempts were canceled as the wind showed up and in a few moments went below the 4m/s line. We were still waiting and after a few moments the wind started increasing gradually. The second race was about to commence.

In this race I made a good start and went to the right side of the course. I was planning but in a super light wind conditions so I could barely push on my fin. Anyway, we somehow managed to complete this race as the wind in the downwind leg increased a bit and kept us in the foot-straps until the very end. Finished 10th.

Later on, the judges tried to make a few more starts but we simply weren't in the wind's path. The judges sent us back to shore. Just after we brought out our gear from the water the judges noticed that the wind was picking up again and decided that it is strong enough to commence a last race of the day.

After the start, I was going quite well. I again chosen the right side but got in to a hole and could only watch how the left-siders were going with no problems. Anyway, I kept my focus on the wind gusts and shifts and not a lot of time passed until I was comfortably seated in my harness and having a good planning stance.

What is more, in the last race I had a super exciting battle with Arvydas Moliušis LTU 789 who was behind me in overall results and was really aiming to overcome me! Aaah, even though he reached the downwind mark first I was not in the mood to give it up so easily. We had a nice thrilling action while going upwind and downwind and used different sides of the course with different tactics and turns, but still, I managed finish in front of him by grabbing the 8th place and defending my 8th place in overall results.

To count all wonderful things that happened in the Lithuanian Formula Championship 2012, I am super happy about nearly everything! Judges for sure made their best for all 7 races to be completed, we also had a very nice grill action with a superb company of friends chatting about everything that matters and is interesting.

I would like to say thanks for all sailors who made this championship really excited! And of course, huge applause for Giedrius Liutkus LTU 11 who won this event. With no doubt, you are really worth it!

That's it for now!
Take care, see you soon!

Arnas Bušmanas LTU 191
